Maine is the northeasternmost U.S. state, known for its rugged coastline, dense forests, maritime heritage, and iconic New England culture. It is the largest state in New England by area and the most sparsely populated state east of the Mississippi River.
Maine borders New Hampshire, Quebec, New Brunswick, and the Gulf of Maine. It became the 23rd U.S. state on March 15, 1820. Its capital is Augusta, and its largest city is Portland.
Maine is nicknamed the Pine Tree State and is famous for its rocky shores, lobster industry, and vast wilderness, including Mount Katahdin, the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail.
