Rhode Island is the smallest U.S. state by area yet one of the most densely populated, located in the New England region of the northeastern United States. It borders Massachusetts to the north and east, Connecticut to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south via Rhode Island Sound and Block Island Sound. Its capital and largest city is Providence.
Rhode Island—nicknamed the Ocean State—has over 400 miles of coastline, a defining feature that shapes its culture, economy, and tourism. It was one of the original 13 colonies and became the 13th state in 1790.
